Afghan President Appoints Investigators for US Kunduz Hospital Airstrike
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Afghanistan's President Ashraf Ghani appointed a commission to investigate an airstrike in northern Kunduz city that destroyed a hospital and killed at least 22 people.
Ghani's deputy spokesman Zafar Hashemi said on Saturday that the five-man team would leave soon for Kunduz to look into the cause of the Oct. 3 airstrike on a trauma center run by the international charity Médecins Sans Frontières, or Doctors Without Borders.
He said the team will be led by the former head of the national intelligence agency Amrullah Saleh, AP reported.
The commander of US forces in Afghanistan, Gen. John F. Campbell has claimed that the the airstrike was requested by Afghan ground forces, but mistakenly hit the hospital.
Military investigations are under way. Doctors Without Borders has called for an independent international fact-finding commission to be established to investigate the US bombing which it deems a war crime.
