Iranian Official Highlights Germany’s Role in EU

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A ranking Iranian official and former foreign minister highlighted the significant role that Germany plays in shaping the European Union’s policies, a sign of which he said is the recent developments in the Middle East.

Iran attaches great significance to Germany’s prominent and determining role in shaping “independent European polices”, Head of the Strategic Research Center of Iran's Expediency Council Ali Akbar Velayati said in a meeting with State Secretary of the Federal Foreign Office of Germany Markus Ederer, held in Tehran on Saturday.

Referring to the latest developments in the Middle East, Velayati added, “The recent regional developments signify Germany’s constructive role in the European Union.”

He also described regular bilateral meetings between Iranian and German officials as a testimony to a “firm friendship” between Tehran and Berlin.

The German diplomat, for his part, said he is quite optimistic about the results of reciprocal meetings because the two nations have much in common and share many cultural values.

Ederer also reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), a nuclear agreement between Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany), highlighting the major role of the accord in the regional and international arenas.

Iran and Germany have held regular political talks since coming into force of the JCPOA in January 2016.
