Protesters Set Fire to Israeli Flag in London amid Tensions in Al-Quds

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Demonstrators set fire to an Israeli flag in central London on Saturday during ongoing furor in the Muslim world over the installation of electronic security checkpoints by the Tel Aviv regime in the occupied Old City of Jerusalem (al-Quds).

An organization called the Palestinian Forum in Britain (PFB) called for a demonstration "against Israeli aggressions in Jerusalem" outside Israel's embassy in the upscale neighborhood of Kensington, i24News reported.

On the Facebook page for the event, the group called on their followers to picket the embassy because the Israeli regime has “closed Al Aqsa Mosque, imposed tight security check on worshippers as part of its plans to seize the holy Muslim site."

Reports said that hundreds turned out for the protest and shouted slogans such as “Israel is a terror state” and “Hands-off Al-Aqsa”.

A video posted on social media by the video agency Ruptly showed a group of young men laying an Israeli flag on the street and enthusiastically stomping on it while a small contingent of police tried to push them away.

The video also showed men setting fire to a flag with a blowtorch.

Much larger protests kicked off across the Muslim world on Friday, to coincide with demonstrations in the occupied Old City of Jerusalem (al-Quds) against new Israeli security measures at the holy compound that followed a retaliatory attack in which two Israeli police officers were killed.

Thousands turned out in the Jordanian capital Amman and Istanbul, Turkey, as well as smaller events in Malaysia and Lebanon. The compound in Jerusalem's Old City houses the Al-Aqsa mosque and the iconic Dome of the Rock, and is considered the third holiest site in Islam and the holiest site in Judaism.

Six Palestinian youths were killed in clashes with Israeli security forces in East Jerusalem on Friday and Saturday, the Palestinian health ministry said, while hundreds more were injured across Jerusalem and the West Bank. On Friday, three Israelis were stabbed to death in a private home in the West Bank illegal settlement of Halamish.

More than 300 Palestinians have lost their lives at the hands of Israeli forces in the ongoing tensions since the beginning of October 2015.

The Tel Aviv regime has tried to change the demographic makeup of Jerusalem al-Quds over the past decades by constructing settlements, destroying historical sites and expelling the local Palestinian population.

Palestinians say the Israeli measures are aimed at paving the way for the Judaization of the city.

The al-Aqsa Mosque compound is a flashpoint Islamic site, which is also holy to Jews. The mosque is Islam’s third holiest site after Mecca and Medina in Saudi Arabia.
