Iranian Speaker: US Should Not Be Allowed to Impede JCPOA Implementation

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani underlined that Washington’s allegations against Tehran should not be allowed to hamper the proper implementation of the 2015 nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Speaking at a Sunday meeting in Tehran with Janusz Lewandowski, a member of the European Parliament and chairman of the delegation for relations with Iran, Larijani deplored US attempts to undermine the implementation of the JCPOA.

“Iran is committed to the JCPOA and unfounded allegations leveled (against Iran) by the US and some of its allies in the region should not be allowed to prevent the implementation of the provisions of the agreement,” he said.

Larijani further pointed to Tehran-EU ties and said the European Parliament can benefit from the good atmosphere created after the JCPOA and help increase economic relations between the two sides through removing the existing obstacles.

Lewandowski, for his part, said the 28 member states of the EU are willing to support the Islamic Republic of Iran in the nuclear accord.

Larijani’s remarks came as concerns have been growing in recent months that the US administration may unilaterally scrap the nuclear agreement between Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany).

In a major confrontational stance against Iran on October 13, US President Donald Trump refused to certify the multilateral deal on Tehran’s peaceful nuclear program.

Speaking from the White House, Trump said he will choose not to certify that Tehran is complying with the agreement.

The 159-page nuclear agreement was reached in July 2015 and came into force in January 2016.

Since the historic deal was signed in Vienna, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has repeatedly confirmed the Islamic Republic’s compliance with its commitments under the JCPOA, but some other parties, especially the US, have failed to live up to their undertakings.
