Hakim Lauds Iran for Supporting Iraq’s Anti-Terrorism Campaign
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Head of the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq (ISCI) Ammar al-Hakim praised Tehran’s support for Baghdad in the fight against terrorist groups and said the Arab country is willing to boost its relations with neighbors, the Islamic Republic of Iran in particular.
During a meeting in Iraq, Ammar Hakim and Ali Akbar Velayati, an international adviser to the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, exchanged views about the latest political developments in the region and ways to promote Tehran-Baghdad relations in all areas.
Hakim said Iraq is willing to cement its relations with neighboring countries, particularly Iran, adding that the Islamic Republic has genuinely sided with Iraq in the fight against terrorism.
Iran’s support for Iraq and Syria in the past years has helped the two Arab countries fight off the Daesh (ISIL or ISIS) Takfiri terrorist group.
Hakim further pointed to the upcoming parliamentary elections due to be held in Iraq in May and hoped for a better future for the Arab country given the change in the approach of Iraqi political groups.
Iraq’s parliament has recently approved May 12 as the date for holding national elections despite calls to delay the vote until the return of nearly 3 million people displaced by the fight against Daesh (ISIS or ISIL) terrorist group.
The over three-year-old fight against Daesh has left most of the areas in northern and western Iraq in ruins, and poor public services have exacerbated the situation.
The elections will be the fourth since the 2003 US-led invasion of Iraq.
