Russian Defense Minister Hails Tehran-Moscow Teamwork in Syria

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu held talks with his Iranian counterpart General Amir Hatami and hailed the two country’s cooperation in Syria.

Shoigu said at the start of talks with the Iranian minister that “our joint work in Syria has brought appreciable results.”

Moscow and Tehran now need to focus on restoring Syria and helping refugees who fled the war to return, the Russian minister said, according to AP.

The Iranian minister, for his part, said Tehran and Moscow would continue their military cooperation in Syria until the complete elimination of terrorism in the Arab country.

The meeting between the two defense ministers in Moscow came on the eve of a trilateral meeting of the presidents of Russia, Turkey and Iran in Ankara that is expected to focus on next steps in Syria.

Heading a military delegation, the Iranian minister has traveled to Russia to attend an international security conference.

Iran and Russia have formed a strong alliance in recent years, with both supporting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s legitimate government against foreign-backed militancy.

In August 2016, Iran let Russian fighter jets use its Nojeh military airbase for missions in Syria.
