Google, Apple Limit Map Functions in Palestine Ahead of Possible Israeli Invasion

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Google Maps and Apple Maps have halted the display of real-time traffic information for Gaza and occupied Palestine, ahead of a possible Gaza invasion by the Israel regime’s military, according to multiple media reports.

"As we have done previously in conflict situations and in response to the evolving situation in the region, we have temporarily disabled the ability to see live traffic conditions and business information out of consideration for the safety of local communities," a spokesperson from Google stated.

The spokesperson clarified that although real-time traffic data has been deactivated, users can still utilize the navigation systems and view estimated arrival times based on live conditions.

Another source familiar with the situation informed Bloomberg that Google's removal of real-time congestion data from Gaza and occupied Palestine was carried out at the request of the Israeli military, as such information could potentially disclose Israeli troop movements.

Previously, Google took a similar action when it disabled live traffic data on Google Maps in Ukraine in 2022 following the launch of Russia's military operation. The company stated that this decision was made after consulting with Ukrainian authorities.

According to Israeli tech outlet Geek Time, Apple seems to have also started complying with the Israel military’s request on Monday, with users no longer able to access live traffic reports on Apple Maps.

At present, neither the Israeli military nor Apple has officially confirmed or denied these reports.

Meanwhile, US officials have reportedly expressed concerns regarding Israel's forthcoming ground operation. Some have suggested that the Israeli army may lack a viable plan for entering Gaza and could face challenges in eliminating the Hamas resistance movement.

Israel declared war on Gaza on October 7 after Hamas initiated a surprise attack on the occupied territories, in response to the Israeli regime’s intensified crimes against the Palestinian people. Israel responded by laying a siege to the enclave, and launched artillery and air strikes, resulting in a death toll exceeding 6,050 people, as reported by local authorities.
