Russia Condemns Israeli Airstrike on Iranian Consulate in Damascus

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Russia rebuked Israel following an airstrike that targeted the Iranian consulate in Damascus, killing Iranian diplomats and military advisers, including Generals Mohammad Reza Zahedi and Mohammad Hadi Hajirahimi.

In a statement on Monday, the Russian Foreign Ministry condemned the bombing of the Iranian consulate in Damascus, emphasizing the protection afforded to diplomatic missions under international law. The attack was described by Russia as unacceptable.

"We consider it necessary for all responsible members of the international community to declare their positions clearly and give their legal assessments of this action," the statement said. It warned that Israel's actions in Syria and the region could lead to a major escalation.

Israel has not officially commented on the airstrike. However, Israeli officials have previously acknowledged targeting Iranian advisers in Syria. The Zionist regime has been linked to numerous such raids over the years.

The White House did not immediately respond to the incident. Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre stated on Monday that the US was "looking into it." A national security spokesperson quoted by Axios said the US "had no involvement in the strike and we did not know about it ahead of time."

According to Axios, Israel notified its key ally moments before the strike, while its fighter jets were already in the air. The Israelis stated their intention to target General Zahedi but did not provide specifics, such as his location at the Iranian consulate.
