Some 400,000 Internally Displaced in Syria's Aleppo: UN Special Envoy

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – There are around 400,000 internally displaced persons (IDP) in the Syrian city of Aleppo, UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura said Thursday.

Some 30,000 people have been displaced in recent days, the UN official said.

“There is a figure, a figure which you need to take into account and which we were confronted with today … in Aleppo there are 400,000 IDPs …. This is basically the equivalent or maybe more than Syrian refugees in the whole Europe,” de Mistura told a briefing, Sputnik reported.

Earlier this month, the first special operation to evacuate the citizens of eastern Aleppo was held. On Monday, the Russian reconciliation center said that the Syrian army had established complete control over 12 districts of eastern Aleppo, liberating some 40 percent of the region’s territory.

On Tuesday, the Russian Defense Ministry said that Syrian government forces had freed some 90,000 residents.
