Syrian President's Wife Diagnosed with Acute Leukemia
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Asma Assad, the wife of Syrian President Bashar Assad, has been diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML), according to a statement from his office on Tuesday.
The condition was detected after the first lady underwent a series of tests following the appearance of symptoms. She, aged 48, will need to undergo isolation during her treatment.
AML is a highly aggressive form of cancer affecting the bone marrow and can progress swiftly. Previous chemotherapy increases the risk of developing this disease.
Asma Assad had previously battled breast cancer and announced her successful recovery in 2019 after undergoing chemotherapy at a Syrian military hospital.
The British-born investment banker tied the knot with Bashar Assad in December 2000, five months after he assumed power following the passing of his father, Hafez Assad.
