26 Charged over South Beirut Suicide Attack

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Military Prosecutor Judge Saqr Saqr Wednesday charged 26 people with links to ISIL and involvement in the Nov. 12 bombings in a southern Beirut suburb, the state-run National News Agency said.

The Nov. 12 double suicide attack in the suburb of Burj al-Barajneh, which was claimed by ISIL (also known as Daesh), killed at least 46 people and wounded over 200.

The NNA said that those charged had worked under the commands of an ISIL leader identified as Abu Walid al-Soury, according to The Daily Star.

They are also suspected of being behind plans to carry out more attacks around the country, transporting explosives and hiding them in apartments in Beirut and the north, and recruiting individuals to ISIL.

Of those charged, only half are in custody, the report added.

The case has been referred to First Military Investigative Judge Riad Abu Ghaida.

The charges come a day after the preliminary results of the investigation into the suicide bombings were handed over to Saqr, as the Internal Security Forces’ Information Branch and General Security wrapped up their preliminary investigation with suspects linked to the case.

The army and security agencies have mounted a series of raids in Beirut and the northern city of Tripoli since the attack, arresting more than 20 people and seizing over 300 kg of explosives and several explosive belts.
