Europe Keen for Broadening of Ties with Iran: MEP

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The chair of the European Parliament’s delegation for relations with Iran, Janusz Lewandowski, hailed the promising prospect for Europe’s ties with Iran, saying that expectations are high for future cooperation between the two sides.

It is a very exciting time because of an opening in the relations between Iran and Europe, Lewandowski told reporters Monday after a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in the Belgian capital of Brussels.

The building of trust between the united Europe and Iran is extremely important, he added.

“On behalf of the European delegation, I can say we are waiting for the deepening of ties (with Iran),” the European Parliament member said.

Everyone highly respects Iran’s civilization, and has high expectations from the ongoing economic contacts with Tehran, he added.

In their meeting, Zarif and Lewandowski discussed the ties between Iran and the EU and cooperation on dealing with the migration crisis.

Zarif arrived in Brussels on Sunday night. During his trip, made at the invitation of the Belgian officials, Zarif is going to hold high-level talks with the EU officials and Belgium’s authorities.

The top Iranian diplomat said upon his arrival that while the process of high-level talks between Tehran and the EU has already begun at the level of deputies, the contacts will go on at a higher level during European Union’s Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini’s upcoming visit to Iran, who will be accompanied by diverse EU commissioners.
