Syrian Parliament Speaker Hails Tehran’s Supports for Damascus

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Syrian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Jihad al-Laham praised Iran’s supporting role in fighting against terrorism in the Arab country and in the ongoing negotiations to resolve the five-year-old crisis in Syria.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran’s supports for Syria have had positive impacts on the ground as well as on the spirit of the Syrian people,” Laham said in a meeting with a senior Iranian parliamentary delegation in Damascus on Sunday.

He went on to say that supports provided by Iran would also lead to the progress of Syrian-Syrian dialogue.

Syria should always be grateful to the Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei and the Iranian people, the parliament speaker noted.

During the meeting, Chairman of the Iranian Parliament's Councils and Internal Affairs Commission Amir Khojasteh, who headed the parliamentary delegation, praised the Syrian nation’s resistance against foreign-backed terrorists.

He further made it clear that although the Islamic Republic provides supports for the oppressed Muslim nations, it never interferes in their internal affairs and believes that the nations’ destiny should be determined by themselves.

Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with various terrorist groups, including Daesh, currently controlling parts of it.

According to a new report by the Syrian Center for Policy Research, the conflict has claimed the lives of over 470,000 people, injured 1.9 million others, and displaced nearly half of the country’s pre-war population of about 23 million within or beyond its borders.

In the meantime, Iran has remained a close ally of Syria and supports its legitimate government in the face of foreign-backed militancy.

Earlier in June 2015, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani hailed the resistance of the Syrian government and people against foreign-backed terrorist groups in the Arab country, saying that Tehran is determined to side with Damascus to the end of the crisis.
