Europe to ‘Do Everything’ to Maintain JCPOA: EU Diplomat

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Helga Schmid, the secretary general of the European External Action Service (EEAS), said European countries “will do everything” necessary to preserve the 2015 nuclear agreement between Tehran and world powers.

“This is not a bilateral agreement, it’s a multilateral agreement. As Europeans, we will do everything to make sure it stays,” Schmid told an Iranian investment conference in Switzerland’s financial capital, Reuters reported.

She stressed that “ditching” the agreement will not help address US concerns about Iran.

Nicholas Hopton, Britain’s ambassador to Iran, also made a speech at the conference in Zurich and said the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) reports had shown Iran was fully complying with terms of the accord.

“We hope that President Trump will recertify the deal and that the US will continue to play a constructive and important role in the implementation of the JCPOA,” he said.

Last month, Trump, during an address before the United Nations General Assembly, said, "The Iran deal was one of the worst and most one-sided transactions the United States has ever entered into frankly that deal is an embarrassment to the United States, and I don't think you've heard the last of it”.

Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) reached the 159-page nuclear agreement in July 2015 and implemented it in January 2016.

Since the historic deal was signed in Vienna, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has repeatedly confirmed the Islamic Republic’s compliance with its commitments under the JCPOA, but some other parties, especially the US, have failed to live up to their undertakings.
