Iran Condemns Kabul Terrorist Attack

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Foreign Ministry strongly condemned a terrorist attack in the Afghan capital of Kabul that killed at least 50 people marking the birthday of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH).

In a statement on Tuesday evening, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi denounced the suicide bombing and expressed condolences to the Afghan government, people and families of the victims of the “ominous and unforgivable” crime.

“The hidden hands behind such an abominable terrorist operation have had no purpose but to fuel ethnic, sectarian and religious seditions,” the Iranian spokesman added.

Qassemi also expressed hope that the Afghan nation would maintain unity, support the central government and use the past experiences in the fight against terrorism to weather the current conditions that have seen a rise in the number of terrorist attacks and brutal crimes with vicious objectives.

Hoping for the Afghan nation’s firm steps in creating and stabilizing peace and sustainable security, the spokesman reaffirmed the Iranian government and nation’s full support for the neighboring country.

On Tuesday, an attacker detonated explosives at a wedding hall in Kabul where hundreds of people and religious figures were marking Prophet Muhammad's birthday.

Afghan officials say the explosion killed at least 50 people and wounded more than 70 others.

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani strongly condemned the attack and declared Wednesday a day of national mourning.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility, while the Taliban has condemned the attack.
