Germany Asks Iran to Help Ease Regional Tensions

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The foreign minister of Germany called on Iran to contribute to the alleviation of tensions in the region.

In a telephone conversation on Friday, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian and Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs of Germany Annalena Baerbock talked about the relations between Tehran and Berlin and the latest developments in Palestine.

On the situation in Gaza, Baerbock stressed the need for efforts to prevent the expansion of the sphere of crisis. She said the Gaza crisis can be settled only through political solutions.

She also underlined that the human rights principles should be observed, adding that Germany welcomes Iran's assistance in reducing the regional tension.

For his part, Amirabdollahian denounced the continuation of the killing of civilians, women and children in Gaza and the West Bank, urging the international community to pay due regard to this issue of significance that relates to human rights, the Foreign Ministry’s website reported.

He condemned the genocide in Gaza and referred to the root cause of the crisis, saying the political solution is to hold a referendum by the United Nations among the original residents of Palestine, including Christians, Muslims and Jews.

As for Tehran-Berlin relations, Amirabdollahian highlighted the cultural and historical bonds between the two nations, saying, “Mutual respect and focusing on common interests is the prerequisite to the maintenance and enhancement of bilateral relations on different fronts, and, within the same framework, the Islamic Republic of Iran welcomes the expansion of ties between Tehran and Berlin.”

The two foreign ministers further highlighted the importance of maintaining the channel of dialogue to help boost bilateral cooperation.

At least 17,487 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli strikes in Gaza since October 7.
