China Urges Compliance with JCPOA in Iran Nuclear Talks

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi outlined China's five-point stance on Iran's nuclear issue in a meeting with Iranian and Russian deputy foreign ministers in Beijing on Friday, emphasizing that any agreement should be based on the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

During discussions with Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi and Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov, Wang underscored China's commitment to a diplomatic resolution.

According to CGTN, China's five principles are as follows:

Diplomatic Resolution Over Coercion – All parties should adhere to peaceful negotiations and oppose the use of force or illegal sanctions. The focus should be on collective security, cooperation, and preventing tensions.

Balance Between Rights and Responsibilities – Iran must uphold its commitment to non-proliferation, while other parties must respect Iran's right to peaceful nuclear energy under the Non-Proliferation Treaty.

Restoration of JCPOA – Any new agreement should be rooted in the JCPOA framework. China urges all parties to resume talks promptly and calls on the US to demonstrate political sincerity by rejoining negotiations.

Opposition to UN Security Council Intervention – Hasty actions by the Security Council could undermine mutual trust. China warns against triggering the "snapback" mechanism, which could undo years of diplomatic progress.

Adherence to Step-by-Step and Equal Principles – A consensus should be reached through consultation, adhering to the principles of gradual and equal progression. Historical experience shows that resolving issues based on "position and power" does not lead to a solution. Only through mutual respect can the greatest "common denominator" be found, one that takes into account the legitimate concerns of all parties, leading to a solution that meets the expectations of the international community.

At a press conference, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning reaffirmed the Beijing meeting as a constructive step by China, Russia, and Iran to promote a political resolution.

Following the trilateral discussions, the three nations issued a joint statement emphasizing that diplomatic engagement remains the most effective approach. They urged all relevant parties to avoid actions that could escalate tensions and create a conducive environment for negotiations.

China and Russia reiterated their support for Iran’s stance that its nuclear program is strictly for peaceful purposes. They also emphasized Iran’s right to civilian nuclear energy and its cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Mao Ning described the current state of the Iran nuclear issue as critical, warning that external pressure through sanctions or military threats would not lead to a solution. Instead, dialogue and diplomatic engagement are the only viable paths forward.

China reaffirmed its readiness to work with all parties to achieve a fair, balanced, and lasting resolution, safeguard the global non-proliferation framework, and contribute to regional and international stability.
