TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s women’s handball team lost to Kazakhstan 33-29 at the 2023 IHF Women's World Championship in an Asian derby on Sunday.

Team Melli Banovan has previously lost to Poland, Germany, Japan, Chile, and Congo in the competition.

Kazakhstan will now go into the Placement Match 29/30, while Iran is now aiming to avoid a last-place finish, by winning its maiden match in their history at the IHF Women's World Championship.

Kazakhstan ended its five-game losing streak at Denmark/Norway/Sweden 2023 and will face the winner of the Paraguay and Greenland in the Placement Match 29/30.

Iran will also seek a historic first win against the losing side between Paraguay and Greenland in the President’s Cup.

Iran’s Fatemeh Merikh was selected as the Player of the Match.
